The Namibia Profile for LX90XX Computer PDF Print option in slimbox / lytebox? (info) E-mail

The possibilities for gliding in Namibia are great. In the season a huge area up to flight level 195 (about 6000 meters) is open for gliding, outside this area uncontrolled airspace ranges up to flight level 145 (about 4500 meters). But there are also TMZ and inaccessible air spaces which are to respect. Violations are severely punished and can easily jeopardize the freedom of all. To minimize the risk of violations Dieter Schwenk of the Bitterwasser organization had the idea to develop a special Bitterwasser profile for LX 90XX computers from LXNAV the most gliders are equipped  with. This profile should make it easy to respect the airspaces, constantly inform about the own position relative to theses air spaces and also give distance and radial from Windhoek VOR for information of the other traffic.

In Dirk Skura, Dieter Schwenk quickly found support for his idea. The special Bitterwasser profile was created and now it forms the basis for navigation in Namibia in a whole series of gliders. That one flies with it in a very hot region of Africa another function makes clear: Every half hour it remembers to drink.

On all important pages, whether in the airport-, waypoint- or task-mode, the Bitterwasser profile shows the positon of the glider relative to restricted air spaces in a special field on a red background. In task-mode, this information also appears on the thermal page, which the program jumps to as soon as a circle is rotated. This page leaves a lot of space for displaying the thermal circles, works with the north-up setting and also informs about the circle radius as an aid for centering. The profile is cleverly structured and full of such useful features. It should certainly be used by many pilots at home in Europe.
